My favourite singer is Lata Mangeshkar. She is recognized as one of the great singers of modern times. To her credit are more than seventy thousands songs in various Indian languages recorded and filmed so far. She possesses a God gifted voice, rare on the world.
Lata was born in a family where music was adored and practice with devotion. The entire Mangeshkar family including his father, brother and sisters were all dedicated to music. Lata came to be known as a well-known playback singer about the age of eleven.
It is really something great in human life that at such the tender age, one is picked up with care to sing for famous Indian films. Her popular song, Ayega Anewala, sang in her teenage days, still rings in our ears but creates a wonderful situation in the minds of the music lovers. Hence, Lata Mangeshkar is my favorite artist.

INTELLIGENCE TESTS

       Design is the act of making something better. Everything, no matter how ordinary, has been designed. That some objects give us no special pleasure or are not fashionable does not alter the fact that somebody decided what they would look like, what they would do and how they would be used.
        Every time you buy a new kettle or toaster, the quality of the design is influential, encouraging you to choose one kettle or toaster over the others. Good design works well. Excellent design works well and gives pleasure. Look at it the other way round. Some objects look very good but do not work well. Take the Alessi kettle, with its curved handle and two-tone whistle. It looks very exciting but the handle can get too hot to touch. Compare this with the familiar Russell Hobbs automatic electric kettle. It has been in production since the late 1950s, works perfectly, and looks good.
        Poor designs are easy to find. If you cannot see what is at the back of the kitchen cupboard without getting down on your hands and knees that is bad design. If you catch your sleeve on a door handle, that is bad design.
        If you cannot understand how to use the controls on your cooker without searching for the instruction book – and if, when you find the book, you still cannot work the timing switch that is unpardonably bad design.
       The question is: how, when these kinds of faults are so obvious, have some designs ever reached our homes? The answer is that in most cases, bad designs emerge because not enough energy and time is given to thinking through all the different questions that should be asked about the product. Kitchen cupboard makers will say that they are making cup-boards as economically as possible. This kind of “cheapness” is one of the main reasons for the absence of good design in our homes. To make a cupboard where the shelves swing out to display the contents when the door is opened is more expensive.

When I was eleven years old, my dad inherited quite a large amount of money from a distant relative. It was typical of him that he decided to use the money to take a whole party of local kids to Disneyland in Florida for three days. Fortunately, I was able to go as well, which was tremendous. In those days, you had to buy tickets for each ride and so we made a checklist of them all and ticked them off one by one until we’d been on every one. They still had a donkey train a canoe ride back then. My friend Eric bought a funny hat with his name on the front and then kept wondering how, all over Disneyland, random people knew his name and kept saying, “Hi Eric!”. My family will never let me forget how I ordered  bowl of potato chips on room service at the motel, which cost them a staggering $20. They were good chips, though!

Most teenagers’ parents have normal jobs, you know like working in an office or being part of a company, but not my mom. She lives for her work and makes spur-of-the moment decisions. When I was a teenager, it almost felt as if I was the parent and she was the child, as I tried to tall her out of whatever her latest scheme involved. You see, my mum’s an archaeologist. She travel round the world finding exciting things in old ruins, and because she was always on the move, so was I! Sometimes I used to wonder if we’d ever settle down and lead a normal family life, but we never did, which is a shame really. Of course, now I’m going to make sure that I don’t do the same to my daughter.

I suppose being twins, my brother and I were always regarded as a single unit and, we did do everything together. From an early age; we were into inventing things, especially things which exploded like rockets, although I don’t ever recall any actually leaving the ground. We were keen on Maths at school and bought a computer when we were eleven years old. It was the best time for getting computers because there was very little software about in those days, so if you wanted to make the computer do anything, you had to write it yourself. Before long we were selling the stuff we’d written to software companies. I don’t think we knew how to turn our interest into money at that stage, having no commercial experience. But we soon found plenty of people who did know, but who couldn’t handle the technical side. We haven’t looked back since.

When I was a teenager, my parents used to send my brother and me off on a week-long summer activity camp each year. Actually, we went to the same place five years running. I think it was because they wanted us to do something outdoors rather than have us sitting in front of a computer screen at home. And it was certainly challenging, if you consider we learnt to do things like climbing and caving. It wouldn’t suit all kids, but for us it was great. We found out how to fend for ourselves and we met lots of people from around the world. I’m still in touch with some of them by e-mail even now. Looking back, I guess it cost my parents a lot of money, but as far as I’m concerned it was a good investment because it really broadened my horizons.

  Many people have tried to row across the Atlantic and quite a few have managed it. It is clear from accounts of survivors that it is an exhausting test of endurance. Soldiers, sailors, housewives, Olympic rowers:the triumphant emerge from surprisingly varied quarters.       I have sailed, climbed, explored the Amazon and run marathons, but what I am looking for now is an endeavour that scares me and may not be within my capabilities. Such as racing across the Atlantic in a rowing boat.

  What is  apparent, however, is that the main struggle takes place not in the muscles but in the mind. So, before fussing over such preliminaries as finding a crewmate and sponsorship to the tune of £50,000, I realised that first I had to explore my own mind and try to answer the obivious question of why I wanted to do something that most people would find frightening and painful.       Two Norwegian sailors were the first to row theAtlantic in 1896. They took 60 days and their achievement was unequalled until 1966, when two soldiers, John Ridgway and Chay Blyth, made in 91 days.

  When we are young we can afford to dream; as we grow older the gap widens between what we would like to do and what we actually can do. We come to the realisation that we either have to act now or dream on. After the age of forty, people respond to that realisation in varying ways, and rowing across the Atlantic is one of them.
